It’s often said that a company’s most prized assets is its people. At Careem, we take this statement to heart and it doesn’t just encompass our administrative employees; but the tens of thousands of Careem Captains who are our true brand ambassadors in every city we operate in.

Careem’s creed centers on people. We aren’t just a ride-hailing application to get you from point A to point B. Our captains are the face by which we greet our users, and their driving is the measure of our quality — which is why their happiness and well being are very important to us.

Careem has welcomed more than 40,000 we’ve had onboard since launching in Egypt. 40,000 captains may not seem like much in the grand scheme of things, especially when one considers the transportation mayhem that is Egypt, but those men (and women) have provided approximately 26 million trips since we launched in January 2015; servicing one million unique users in that time!

We have entire departments dedicated to working solely on servicing our captains. These services extend to those 40,000+ Careem captains and include seminars and workshops on road safety and improving their quality of driving to better serve our users, as well as workshops which focus on customer service etiquette to further raise the standards our users have come to expect from Careem.

Our focus on improving our Captains’ lives does not just extend to enabling and providing them with skill sets that help them in there job but it extends to their personal lives as well. The average revenue for a full-time Careem Captain is roughly in the EGP 8,000 per month range; a sharp increase from the industry average of EGP 3,000 per month for most private transportation drivers in Egypt. Even part-time Careem Captains make a notable sum that can supplement their overall income with the average part timer making EGP 2,000 per month; two-thirds of what a full-timer non-Careem Captain makes.

Those same dedicated departments don’t just concern themselves with making sure our Captains are financially motivated, they also work tirelessly to provide Careem Captains with various solutions that make their lives easier, which includes financial aid — inclusive of their families.

Over the past 24 months since we launched in Egypt, those 40,000 or so drivers have driven in more than 34,000 cars; which completed approximately 600,000,000 kilometers (that’s millions) in trips in Egypt alone; that’s the distance to the planet Jupiter in driving!

We focus on our Captains because they are the backbone upon which everything else we do is built. We believe in the perseverance of humans to continuously excel and exceed expectations. We are a company that puts people first, because people are best positioned to learn, grow and develop together using their shared experiences. We believe in the hunger humans have for wanting to do more and to do better. Most of all, we believe that technology is best utilized when it can make us better humans and to help other people in their lives.

I like the power of fresh starts, like details yet admire the big picture. Life never ceases to amaze me.I learn, un-learn and re-learn. I am wrong 80% of time
